Gifts for the Bassist In Your Life

It’s that time of year again where we spend our hard earned pennies on thoughtful gifts for our loved ones. But maybe there is a person (or people) in your life that are hard to buy for. I know that in my life I am a hard one to buy for because quite frankly I don’t really need much!

But even for the pickiest of people you can still find them a gift. Strings, tuners, pedals/effects and straps are some of the common gifts that are never a bad thing to give to a musician anytime of year!

Here are a few other options to get your holiday gift ideas rolling:

  • Studio Time: If you really want to give the ultimate gift of hard work and dedication to the bassist in your life, you can purchase some studio time.
  • New Bass: This can be a great gift if you have a lot of extra dough to throw around or if there is someone who really wants to start playing but doesn’t have an axe. This is the perfect time of year to go to your local guitar store in person or online and see if they have any specials.
  • Fret Markers: Along with the new bassist, these fret markers can be really helpful for learning the fretboard. You can go on Amazon and check out the selection they have (there are even glow in the dark ones!)
  • Books: Many beginner, intermediate and advanced bass and music theory books on the market. Hal Leonard and Alfred Music Publishing have a plethora of music theory and bass guitar books. Here are my top picks:
  • BEGINNER: I really love Billy Sheehan’s beginner and advanced books (http://amzn.to/2kpsxTo)
  • INTERMEDIATE: All About Bass: A Fun and Simple Guide to Playing Bass Book & Online Audio (http://amzn.to/2BBJf5t)
  • ADVANCED: Bass Fretboard Basics: Essential Scales, Theory, Bass Lines & Fingerings (Essential Concepts) (http://amzn.to/2AzBxt8 )
  • Lessons: This is also a special that is usually offered by local guitar stores around this time of year. Free lessons can be included when purchasing a certain instrument or as a promotion for just signing up. You can never go wrong with learning some awesome bass.
  • Gift Cards: Unsure of what to get? This is the easiest thing to give and have the musician in your life be able to choose what they want. Guitar Center, Sweetwater, Musician’s Friend, and your local guitar stores are excellent options.

Now that you have an arsenal of items to purchase let the buying begin!

Why I Love Alice In Chains

“Say goodbye don’t follow”; “Walkin’ tall machine gun man, they spit on me in my homeland”; “Eat of the apple, so young I’m crawling back to start”; “What makes you want to carve your initials in me?”;

Just some of the many great songs by this absolutely innovative band. Now I love a lot of bands and if anyone has noticed I am obviously a big fan of Black Sabbath, DIO, and those types of bands. But I also love bands that really speak to you and understand the struggles of living in a society permeated by hate, bullying, not understanding who you are, etc..

When I think of Alice In Chains I think of college kids, good vibes, and peace. Even though there music speaks of tragedy, hopelessness and otherwise dark times I find tranquility in it.

It seems if I am having a bad or off day and AIC comes on the radio, it throws me out of my sadness and into a realm of nirvana.

The first time I saw Alice In Chains was when the toured with Velvet Revolver as their opening act. It was at Darien Lake Theme park in Darien, NY. When I had saw them this was when they had just released “Black Gives Way To Blue” and they rocked it! I remember being amazed by how much William DuVall sounded like Layne Staley. They sounded amazing and would love to see them live again!

Their music composition is relatively easy to play and understand. Learning the fundamentals of music theory and some guitar chords helps understand how they write and play their music. The rhythm makes them unique in that there is no other sound out there quite like them.

Eb minor, distortion, power chords and more adorn the deep, darkness of this music.

Here is my cover of Rooster, one of my personal favorites.

Mike Starr, RIP, was a phenomenal bass player. Having memorable bass intros in songs, such as, “Would?”, “Angry Chair”, “Rotten Apple” and memorable surely make the music stand out with memorable moving blues and minor basslines. Their current bass player, Mike Inez, having memorable bass lines for “Stone”, “The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here”, and much more.

Thanks for stopping by. Let me know what you love about Alice In Chains!

Holy Diver – DIO (Bass Cover)

Holy Diver
You’ve been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh what’s becoming of me

Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he’s clean
Oh don’t you see what I mean

Gotta get away
Holy Diver

Shiny diamonds
Like the eyes of a cat in the black and blue
Something is coming for you

Race for the morning
You can hide in the sun ’till you see the light
Oh we will pray it’s all right

Gotta get away-get away

Between the velvet lies
There’s a truth that’s hard as steel
The vision never dies
Life’s a never ending wheel

Holy Diver
You’re the star of the masquerade
No need to look so afraid

Jump on the tiger
You can feel his heart but you know he’s mean
Some light can never be seen

Holy Diver
You’ve been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh what’s becoming of me

Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he’s clean
Oh don’t you see what I mean

Gotta get away
Holy Diver

Black Sabbath – Paranoid (Intro)

“Finished with my woman ’cause she couldn’t help me with my mind.

People think I’m insane, because I am frowning all the time.

All day long I think of things, but nothing seems to satisfy.

Think I’ll lose my mind if I don’t find something to pacify.

Can you help me occupy my brain?

Oh yeah.

I need someone to show me the things in life that I can’t find.

I can’t see the things that make true happiness, I must be blind.”

Black Sabbath – Paranoid

DIO – Don’t Talk To Strangers – Short

“Don’t talk to strangers
‘Cause they’re only there to do you harm
Don’t write in starlight
‘Cause the words may come out real

Don’t hide in doorways
You may find the key that opens up your soul
Don’t go to heaven
‘Cause it’s really only hell

Don’t smell the flowers
They’re an evil drug to make you lose your mind
Don’t dream of women
‘Cause they only bring you down”
From the Holy Diver album we have Don’t Talk To Strangers.

Rooster Cover

Rooster is a classic song by Alice In Chains. The music video to the song shows depictions of the Vietnam War. Alice In Chains was formed in 1987 in Seattle, Washington and was one of the leading bands in the grunge movement.

This song has the perfect depictions of ’90s mellow hard grunge mixed with Black Sabbath wah wah tones.

I hope you enjoy my bass cover of Rooster by Alice in Chains
